The chill wind blew around Ariadne, swatching her in gusts of snow that her heavy cloak did little to deflect as she walked up the ancient worn steps carved into the side of the mountain face. She looked upwards at the steep stair that still remained ahead of her. She was more than halfway in her ascent and yet it seemed that so much remained before her. A deep rumbling sound carried across the howling wind, seeming to shake the very moutain itself. Those that did not know better they might imagine that the wind was merely roaring across the slope but Ariadne did know better and the sound confirmed her reason for coming here even in such horrid conditions.
Hearing the sound again she redoubled her efforts as she held tightly to her staff. After all that she had done thus far, it would be a true travesty to slip and fall now. There would certainly be no recovery from such a fall either, the steep stairs were almost vertical and only the truly mad or desperate would attempt to ascend them amidst the howling wind and swirling snow. Ariadne was most certainly of the latter category, she hoped to bring peace by introducing chaos. It was a mad scheme and one she admitted may in fact fail but to not try seemed a far greater crime to her. With such reasoning within her mind, she continued to ascend the perilous stair towards the summit above.
When finally she crested the last stair, she found herself standing upon a flat expanse of barren rock nestled between steep sloping rock faces. In the center of this natural amphitheater was the source of the roaring rumble that she had heard during her ascent. The massive bull tossed its head, snorting as it pawed the ground with its hoof, setting the rock beneath Ariadne's feet shaking. Looking at her with flashing blue eyes, Ariadne looked around the bull's legs to and neck to see its chains. They were affixed to jutting rocks inscribed with runic script, keeping the great beast lashed in place even as it lowed and snorted furiously. The sound now was nearly defeaning and Ariadne had to brace herself against the roar of the bull's voice as she approached.
“Hear me Thunderer!” she cried as she raised her staff and arms. “Hear me and listen!”
The great bull snorted, pawing the ground again in another earth shaking demonstration of its power.
Ariadne's voice remained strong as she shouted over the wind.
“I call upon you Thunderer, for your power and your wrath.” blue lightning sparked at the edge of her staff, lancing out to strike the great chains that bound the gargantuan bull to its tethers. “In releasing you once more upon this world, I ask that you strike my enemies and show them that their's is not the path of the victorious but in fact that of the defeated!”
The blue lightning coursed across the chains, crackling along the links and shattering them one by one. The bull snorted, shacking the shattered chains from its body as it snorted and looked down with its sparking blue eyes at Ariadne who stared back into the alien gaze of the great creature as fresh lightning crackled across the bull's horns. Then as quickly as she had released the creature, it lifted its head and let out a fearsome low that shook the mountains around it, deafening Ariadne who was forced to drop her staff as she huddled down and clapped her hands over her ears. Then with a snorting start, the bull charged forwards, bounding over the crouched a Ariadne and leaping off the mountain.
Gathering up her staff once more, Ariadne hurried to the edge of the cliff and watched as the bull bounded down the steep mountain side, each strike of its hooves sparking fresh arcs of lightning and leaving great fissures in the steep slope of the rock. She watched until the creature had vanished into the swirling snow far below her, but even then she could hear its thunderous passage as it charged out into the world. Those she wished vengeance upon would soon feel the ground quake beneath them and look up in terror at the Thunderer's return.
That the old legends spoke of the destruction the creature might wreck upon the world was of little consequence to her. All that mattered was that it was once more unleashed and those who had taken everything from her would soon know what it would feel to have everything taken from them.
