Something you hear and see all the time from writers is 'if you want to write, read a lot'.

While this is true (and I certainly believe it is) it is not reading that makes you a good writer. If that were the case anyone who picks up a book would be able to craft an interesting or at least well crafted story.

Since that obviously isn't the case then evidently reading isn't the key.

So what is it about reading that all the writers say is so helpful?

Understanding.

It is not enough to read, you must analyze and understand what it is you have read.

So to anyone that asks what it takes to write interesting and engaging stories with compelling characters I will tell you this: pick up your favorite book and read it, and while you are reading it think about what makes you love it. Consider what about the author's style engages you so greatly and why you love your favorite characters.

Observe and learn the nuances of such things as you read, and that will go a long ways towards your stories being the great epics you hope them to be.
