So as many of you know there was a shooting in a church in Charleston South Carolina (for those of you who aren't familiar with the United States that is in the south east along the Atlantic seaboard) where one racist jackass shot nine church going people whose only crime was being born the wrong color in his book.

Leaving aside that whole aspect of the situation we're going to move right into the next part of the this situation: the Confederate flag.

For those not versed in the American Civil War it was fought from 1861 to 1865 on the American continent between the Union and the Confederacy the former trying to maintain the united of the country while the former were trying to establish a southern country for themselves and their slaves.

I understand the history and the pride that goes into the Civil War and there is a lot to be proud of on both sides and much to be ashamed of in equal measure...however flying the Confederate flag as an American always seems quaint to me and honestly a bit idiotic...especially since most of the people flying these flags tend to be the 'murica sort of people.

If you're flying that flag as a course of pride however you're delusional. There is nothing to be proud of in that symbol. It is a symbol of an oppressive regime of deluded individuals who were led to war based on the presumption that it was okay to treat an entire race of people as animals (or in some cases worse) or as if they were mentally retarded and needed special care in order to survive.

Over a hundred years later and people are still proud of this symbol of racism and oppression. No idea why because it's essentially the equivalent of a German parading around with a Nazi flag but hey, it's okay right?

Leaving the silliness of the flag, we're going to move on to a related topic that I came across today at the gym.

A South Carolina politician was speaking to the news and he said the following:

Firstly: that nine people sat in a church and waited to be slaughtered.

Secondly: that if they had been armed none of this would have happened.

Really?

You're going to turn this into a gun argument?

Fine, let's  do that.

Now I like guns and not only work with them but own a handgun for personal protection because I live in an area where that's a thing. However I don't like living in said area that requires that really. I'd rather not need the protection if I could help it however since it is needed I have it.

Now think about this, this politician is saying that it isn't the racist's fault that this happened. Oh no, it isn't his fault or the society of cultural racism that still lingers all across the South, nope, none of that is at fault. What is at fault is that these nine church goers (among them the reverend) were not armed.

Does anyone else see something wrong there?

When we start to carry weapons not because someone MIGHT do something but because someone WILL do something there is a problem. You should not have to go armed to your place of worship, a place where you seek comfort and peace. Anyone who thinks that is okay has serious issues.

Now could the parishioners being armed have helped? Sure, one of them could have shot the asshole provided they weren't one of the ones shot first...however that is not the point.

Being armed shouldn't be the issue here.

The issue is that a political representative of the people of South Carolina just said that black people need to own guns to protect themselves from white people.

THAT is a major issue and needs to be addressed because otherwise fuck us all.

America:  Proudly The Dumbest Goverment On Earth.  I have so many stories involving stupid acts of the Forest Service, Military, Wildlife Services, etc etc.  Honest, politicians are getting dumber every second.  We seriously need to stop electing officials that have no common sense or knowledge.
