History: the Delta-15 Voidsprite-class heavy interceptor originated in the civil design of the Delta-12 Skysprite-class. When the Clone Wars broke out the Jedi Order's standard fighter was the smaller light interceptor Delta-7 which while potent was not a wartime design. Kuat Systems Engineering, the Kuat subsidiary that had built the Delta-7, decided to redesign another of their fighters for the Jedi Order. The Delta-12 Skysprite-class, an enlarged two-seater unarmed variant of the Delta design, the Delta-12 had been designed for the civil market and saw use with the Jedi Order frequently with masters and their apprentices.
However its lack of armament meant that the Delta-12 was unsuited for the intense combat of the Clone Wars. This meant that it quickly fell out of use and Kuat Systems Engineering set about remedying this. The new design, the Delta-15, built upon the original Delta-12 but increased its armor protection and gave it more powerful shielding. In addition it now carried four medium lasers and concussion missile launchers, giving it a large increase in firepower over the older Delta-7.
With a two-seater cockpit and a central droid socket for a full astromech droid the Voidsprite-class became a popular fighter choice for Jedi knights and masters whose apprentices were unable to go into combat themselves. It did not see the widespread use of the Delta-7 or the later Eta-2 but those Jedi that used it welcomed the added versatility of the design and appreciated its increased firepower and survivability. Like all KSE fighter designs of the era it did not have its own hyperdrive, instead utilizing the same hyperdrive ring as other Delta starfighters. The Voidsprite would see combat throughout the Clone Wars though its exclusive use by Jedi meant that it remained a rare sight aboard the Republic's combat ships.
Following the Clone Wars the Empire found no use for the Delta-15 and KSE quickly found themselves without a market for the fighter and quickly ceased production to concentrate on other projects and the Voidsprite all but vanished from space. It found new life amidst the various resistance movements against the Empire who utilized the craft that the Empire had abandoned as long range scouts and armed couriers. The craft's advanced sensors and communications suite made it an ideal first line of defense against the Empire and it continued in this role as the Rebel Alliance took shape. While never serving in the numbers of other Clone Wars era designs like the Z-95 and Y-wing the Alliance nevertheless utilized the limited number of Delta-15s to great effect until newer and more versatile designs replaced it.
